Next week the members of the GNOME Mobile initiative will descend on Austin for the 3rd GNOME Mobile summit, which will be held as part of the Linux Foundation collaboration summit. On the agenda are the creation of a roadmap for the initiative, and encouraging industry participants to collaborate in the community on projects of joint interest.

GNOME 2.22 has been released, bringing a whole ream of new apps, features and improvements to GNOME users.
Among the most significant additions in this release are the addition of a photo and video taking application that integrates with your webcam called Cheese, a new VNC viewer called Vinagre and the addition of an advanced and integrated IDE, Anjuta.
Notable improvements are the improved support for DVD playback, subtitles and VLC support in the Totem video player, an improved international clock applet, Google calendar integration in Evolution, improved accessibility for web apps and a whole new library to support networked file-systems.

The second annual report of the GNOME Foundation is available for download (1860 KB, PDF) now. The report aims to bring a summary of GNOME community activities in 2007. It includes a review of the year, accounts of various community activities and events around the world, and foundation development actions during the year.

Originally based on the Freerock GNOME project, GNOME.SlackBuild (GSB) provides the latest GNOME Desktop (2.20.3) for Slackware Linux. It includes both a binary distribution, as well as a complete GNOME source build system. The GSB project has been re-vitalised by a new development team who have, over the past several months of hard work, re-engineered the GSB source build system and brought the project back to the forefront of the GNOME packaging projects for Slackware. This project also supports and provides binary packages for x86_64 ports of Slackware, such as Slamd64.

After the by far longest PyChess development cycle, version Philidor beta, codenamed 0.8 beta, has been released!

During April's CE Linux Embedded Linux conference in Santa Clara, GMAE was announced. CELF is organizing a Embedded Linux Conference also in Europe this year, in Linz in Austria. If you are interested in Embedded Linux and want to met a lot of the people involved with GNOME on the embedded front, then ELC Europe 07 is one of the best places to go. He didn't have a preference when it came to Linux distributions so he tested a number of them. The SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop (SLED) stood out for Giroux. It came with the GNOME desktop, which he regards as faster than most, Firefox, which is the company's preferred browser, and the Citrix client built-in.

A GNOME enthusiast shares 10 nice ideas about how to improve GNOME, adding some more polish and usefulness. Furthermore, most of those ideas are not of the blue sky type, and could be implemented in a short time.

The latest issue of the GNOME Journal has just been published! It features an article about GStreamer audio effects, an interview with Ken VanDine about GNOME 2.18 Live Media releases, an introduction to Accerciser, and a summary of GNOME.conf.au 2007. The other day I stumbled upon this neat tool that helps cleanup your GConf registry, called GConf Cleaner. While GNOME registry size isn't nowhere near the size of Windows registry, and thus shouldn't slow your computer too much, it's still nice to have a tool that cleans unused and obsolete entries.
gconf-cleaner is a Google Summer of Code project.

Timed to be released with GNOME 2.18.2, the Foresight Linux team is happy and proud to announce the release of Foresight Linux 1.3. For more information, view the release notes or download Foresight Linux, including a number of Live Media images, today.
Foresight Linux continues to build on it’s success of releasing a stable Linux distribution with the latest software, including GNOME and applications such as Banshee for music management, F-Spot for photo management, Pidgin and Ekiga for internet communication and OpenOffice.org for productivity and office applications. Providing the latest versions of applications gives our users access to the latest bug fixes, and the use of Conary as a package manager makes it easy for users to update the software on their desktop.

The GNOME Roadmap is a big-picture view of functionality we expect GNOME to include in short-term and long-term future. The roadmap is based on feedback from current GNOME developers and other community members.

So the list of approved GNOME SoC projects is now online with a lot of interesting projects getting approved. Highlights include projects to further improve GNOME bluetooth support, Scanning support and input device hotplugging. Other interesting projects revolved around Telepathy and the new VOIP infrastructure, Pitivi improvements and Evolution. Be sure to read through the list and see whats happening.
There are of course also a long host of other projects participating in Google Soc, so if you click into the project name on code.google.com/soc you will be able to view their approved projects. Many of them are of course relevant to GNOME in various ways, ranging to improvements to applications popular among GNOME users to for instance HAL support for NetBSD enabling better running of GNOME on that platform.
