PyChess Philidor 0.8 has been released. This happens after nearly a year
coding, and a rewrite of large parts of the codebase for stability and
and your friend with PyChess, now is time to!

- - - Online chess play on the FICS servers.
- - - Ability to undo and pause chess games.
- - - Support for UCI engines like Fruit, Glaurung and Shredder.
- - - Full list of changes: http://code.google.com/p/pychess/wiki/PhilidorRelease

After almost two years of development, we announce the first release candidate of Gambas 2.

We're making this announcement now in hopes of attracting more testers users to the project during the release candidate cycle, to help us find any bugs we might have missed.

GTK support in GAMBAS coming of age ...

Although I'd seen GAMBAS 'around' for quite some time, I'd written it off as a Qt/KDE 'thing' and not really paid it much attention. (I'd also made an assumption based on the name that it has something to do with writing games..)

More recently however I've been experimenting with GAMBAS (it's *not* aimed at writing games) and found that although it sports a Qt front-end and widget set, it's very robust and provides a fantastic IDE approaching the levels of Delphi / VB.

One of the new features available in the development version that has thus far been overlooked is full Gtk support!

New phone on the way using GTK+ and GNOME libraries

Following the success of Nokia with their Maemo environment it seems another product using our favourite open source framework is being worked on. Linux Devices cover the Neo1973 phone which will offer a lot of features comparable to the much touted Apple iPhone. There is also a email announcement from FIC explaining the device a little more in developer terms. Be sure to check out the photos in the linuxdevices article.

Group plots Desktop Linux printing improvements

If you think setting up and using a printer in Linux is too much trouble, take heart -- you're not alone. To come to grips with a wide range of Linux printing-related issues, the OSDL-sponsored Portland Project has just held the first Desktop Linux Printing Summit in Atlanta.

The meeting was attended by about 40 developers from printer vendors, such as Hewlett-Packard, Lanier, and Lexmark; to operating system distributors like Apple Computer, Debian, and Novell; to those two Linux desktop powers, GNOME and KDE; and more. Their job? To nail down exactly what's wrong with printing and Linux, and to work out ways to resolve these problems once and for all.

Shrinking Man 0.1 - A Diet Tracking Application

I just finished the first release Shrinking Man, an application for tracking your weight and the calories consumed each day. It integrates well with the GNOME desktop environment. Following the GNOME HIG as closely as possible was one of the objectives, even if there are still some known issues - the window title is one example.

Shrinking Man provides an easy interface: If you are the only user just pop up the application and start editing, but it has also support for multiple profiles if you wish.

The liveCD makes it easy to download one file, burn it, and show off the GNOME 2.12 sexiness to your friends, family, and any friendly media types who are hanging around :) [Information on downloading it inside the story.]

Open Clip Art Library Release 0.16 Announcement :: http://www.openclipart.org

Aug 1, 2005 UTC — Release 0.16 of the Open Clip Art Library (www.openclipart.org) is now available on-line for download as an individual package consisting of 4442 images submitted by over 443 artists from around the world.

This releases squishes a major bug that replaced valid keywords in the clip art files with some strange HASH memory location text. Most of the clip art in the library and this release is now repaired.

Bryce Harrington and Jon Phillips both presented at the 2005 Desktop Developers Conference in Ottawa. Harrington's presentation promoted Inkscape (www.inkscape.org) while Phillips' presentation introduced the Open Clip Art Library to the freedesktop community. Both presentations were well received and sparked several debates.

Downtime

After several months of poor stability, a crashed hard drive, and several days of downtime the the server that powers this site, gnomesupport.org, and the gDesklets site is now back up. I purchased parts to put together a new machine so things should be faster now. Currently only running on 384MB of borrowed RAM, but I have GIG on order that should be here next week.

Also special thanks to thos for the new AGO feed viewable on the side of the FootNotes website!
