The team behind the GStreamer media application framework, a library for developers, recently launched its stable series with version 0.10.0, and announced plugins to support files protected by digital rights management (DRM) software and for playback of the widely used MP3 format.

Developers of the framework toiled for 18 months leading up to the new release, which they tout as having improved playback and video seeking functions, support for real-time transport protocol, and fraction-based frame rates, among others.

Andy Wingo put together a newsletter about the current state of GStreamer 0.9/0.10 development. The newletter covers recent developments and changes and is meant to become a regular feature. Andy also sent out a mail proposing a roadmap for doing GStreamer 0.10 placing the 0.10 release in early December.

OReilly Network feature an article from Jono Bacon talking about using Linux for Video Production. The article talks a lot about the GStreamer multimedia framework and Pitivi the Non-linear video editor. Topics range from currently available software to what to expect going forward from Linux on the multimedia front.

One of the weaknesses of the Unix application-base is a good, stable and easy to use *home* video editor. Many applications have tried to fill up the void, like Kino and Cinelerra, but with mediocre results for the kind of functionality and ease of use a normal household would expect. This is where DIVA comes in.

The GStreamer team have just announced the first release of the new development series of GStreamer, 0.9.1. This release kicks off an exciting new chapter in the project history and will hopefully bring a lot of nice improvements to our application developers and end-users. The new development series is not 100% API compatible with the 0.8.x series which we have mantained for quite some time now and which is the one used in current releases of GNOME. That said the API changes are relativly moderate and applications should be possible to port over in a matter of days, at least in the case of most playback applications.

We have another GStreamer plugins 0.8.8 release with a sizeable number of bugs fixed, 99 if my counting is correct. Ronald Bultje has continued his bugfixing work and also merged a lot of patches from many other contributors fixing and adding important stuff. We now support even more weird/broken files of various formats and more work has gone into improving DVD support (still not 100%).

A nice gimmick in this release is the puzzle plugin. So you can open gstreamer-properties and change the videosink to custom with something like 'puzzle ! xvimagesink' as the custom videosink. Then whenever you play a video in totem it will be a puzzle game and you need to puzzle your videos to view them.

The GStreamer team has made three new releases recently in the ongoing quest to provide high quality playback support. GStreamer Core 0.8.8, GStreamer ffmpeg 0.8.3 and GStreamer plugins 0.8.7. All these 3 releases contain significant playback related bugfixes and additions. For instance one thing that got missed in the plugins release notes is that we know have a MMS protocol plugin which means you can view wva/wmv (not wm9) streams using GStreamer and Totem. But be sure to read more as this is not all :)

Another piece of the puzzle that the GStreamer community hope to solve is in place now with the first public beta release of PiTiVi, a GStreamer based non-linear audio/video editing software for GNU/Linux. Being built on top of GStreamer it will get a lot of development work and bugfixes done for free as it directly benefit from the development work being done for such applications as Totem,Rhythmbox,Flumotion and Cupid. And of course all these applications and many others get to take advantage of the development and bugfixes done for PiTiVi.

A new release of the GStreamer plugins package is out. Lots of bugs fixed in this release (44 bugzilla items closed). New polypaudio sound server plugin and support for musepack files. Another important addition to this release is support for chained ogg files, which is important for many ogg web radio streams for instance. Some important fixes to our ALSA support was also made, so people who had troubles with ALSA output with earlier releases are advised to give this one a go.

Work on cleaning up the visualization plugins have been done so you will probably have visualization support with the GStreamer backend for the next release of Totem.

As many of you know Fluendo is paying Ronald Bultje to work fulltime on fixing GStreamer playback issues at the moment. The goal is to make Totem and GStreamer the best video player for Linux and Unix. Ronald have been fixing tons of bugs and Wim Taymans have also chipped in to fix a lot of playback bugs. These two releases, of GStreamer core and GStreamer plugins, contains all the bugfixes so far. Ronald will continue working on improving playback but we hope the community will help us by testing these releases and providing bugzilla reports with files attached of files still giving you issues. Of course patches never hurt either :)
